News: Charting a Course: A 50-Year Journey of Discovery Map® 🗺️
For over half a century, Discovery Map® has been a fixture in resort towns across North America, guiding visitors and connecting them with local businesses. What began as a quirky, hand-drawn map has evolved into a comprehensive digital and print franchise. Join us as we explore the remarkable journey of this iconic brand, from its humble beginnings in a Vermont ski town to its future on a global scale.
The Beginning: A Hippie and a Handshake
Our story starts in 1972 in Vermont’s Mad River Valley. A self-proclaimed “ski bum” named Felix von Moschzisker started a local gossip sheet called the SCENE Scene , which featured ads from local businesses.

Two years later, artist Bud Sibley drew the first Mad River Valley map, a charming and detailed guide that quickly became a local hit.

The maps’ popularity soon caught the attention of Bud and his wife, Diane, who purchased the business from Felix in 1981 . They expanded the concept to other resort areas, laying the foundation for what would become Resort Maps . In 1986, Larry and Kathy Murphy took over, continuing the expansion and solidifying the brand’s presence .

The Rise of a Franchise
A pivotal moment came in the early 1990s with the arrival of Chandler “Chan” Weller, a marketing director from a local ski resort. His expertise and dedication helped the company expand to more ski towns across Vermont .

This expansion proved so successful that in 1993, the business launched its first franchise location in Laconia, NH . The franchise model was a game-changer, allowing for rapid growth and empowering local entrepreneurs to bring the maps to their own communities.

A Colorful Evolution and Global Vision
Over the years, the maps themselves evolved. In 2000, they received a vibrant upgrade to full color, making them even more visually appealing and informative . The company’s leadership changed hands again in 2005 with Peter Hans taking the reins. This new era of leadership led to the acquisition of Discovery Maps LLC in 2011 and the unification of all maps under the Discovery Map® brand by 2012.

Today, Discovery Map® continues to grow, with new franchisees joining the family each year. The brand has embraced the digital age, with the acquisition of Localvore adding a digital directory and special offers to the experience.
Looking Ahead: The Next 50 Years
From a simple, hand-drawn sheet to a dynamic, multi-platform franchise, Discovery Map® is a testament to the power of a great idea and a passion for local communities. As we look to the future, we’re excited to expand beyond North America and continue to innovate.
